The organising committee would like to thank our industrial sponsors
for generously supporting BMSS ISO-SIG and SIMSUG 2009

* Happy New Year *

Last Minute News!

We have been upgraded to larger rooms, still within the university main building.
We are now meeting in Hunter Halls East : room A14 on the campus plan on our web site:
http://www.suerc-conference.co.uk/bmss-simsug/index.html

PRESENTERS! Please ensure that your talks are in Powerpoint 2003 format or earlier!

We have now closed abstract submissions.
The two progammes include more than 50 exciting oral and poster presentations.

Final programmes are available at:
http://www.suerc-conference.co.uk/bmss-simsug/programme.html

A book of abstracts for each programme is also available to download

See you in Glasgow!

Breaking News 18th December 2008

Abstract deadline extended!

Abstracts continue to arrive, but with the hectic period before the holiday season, we have decided to extend the abstract submission deadline until the end of December. For abstract submission, see the 'PRESENTATION' link on the web site. We are using a form for each meeting. Instructions are given for email submission of completed abstracts.

Programmes will feature your original communications built around a core of three invited presentations. Draft programmes are now available through the PROGRAMME link on the web site.  Both meetings will feature your ~15 minute presentations.

Registration is through the BMSS, follow the 'REGISTRATION' link on the web site or go directly to the BMSS web site: http://www.bmss.org.uk/meetings.htm

The theme of the BMSS ISO-SIG meeting is the in vivo application of stable isotope tracers, most likely using GCMS and LCMS techniques.
Rob Beynon (Liverpool) is to talk on current proteomics work using stable isotopes. This session may naturally include original communications using amino acids tracers and the measurement of protein synthesis, using GCMS and LCMS.
Muriel Caslake (Glasgow) will present her work on lipoprotein kinetics in a session that would naturally host other lipid work.
Roel Vonk (Groningen) will present his work on lactose intolerance and include ongoing proteomics studies. This session may have a carbohydrate metabolism theme.
Groups currently using stable isotopes and GCMS and LCMS are encouraged to support the meeting and to compare methods, models and instrumentation.

The theme of the SIMSUG 2009 meeting is the measurement and interpretation of natural variations of stable isotope abundance, predominantly using Isotope Ratio MS.
James McCullagh (Oxford) will describe current work using LC-IRMS in a session that would naturally include original communications featuring other applications of compound-specific isotope analysis.
Simon Kelly (Institute of Food Research, Norwich) will describe the application of Stable Isotopes in Studies of Food Authentication.
Melanie Leng (BGS, Keyworth) will discuss current work on silicon and oxygen isotopes in a session that will likely include other 'inorganic' applications.

Applications from geology, ecology, soil science, climate science, forensics, drugs of abuse and food adulteration are also likely to feature in a full programme of your original communications.

Breaking News 12th December 2008

We are pleased to announce a third keynote speaker for SIMSUG 2009! See below.
Draft programmes are now available through the 'PROGRAMME' link.

Send us your Abstracts!

Abstract submission is picking up, so don't be late! See the 'PRESENTATION' link.
We are using a separate downloadable abstract form for each meeting.
Instructions are given for email submission of completed abstracts. Should you wish to request a specific day for your presentation, please indicate this when submitting.

Programmes for each meeting will feature your original communications built around a core of three keynote presentations.
Following the successful format of SIMSUG, both meetings will feature your ~15 minute presentations.

A number of additional sponsors have kindly agreed to support the meetings.  Web sites can be visited through links on their logos on our web site.

Registration is through the BMSS, follow the 'REGISTRATION' link
or go directly to the BMSS web site: www.bmss.org.uk/meetings.htm

Second Announcement, 15th November 2008

First Announcements, October 2008

BMSS Stable Isotope SIG Meeting (BMSS ISO-SIG), January 2009

The first meeting of the newly-formed BMSS special interest group on stable isotopes (BMSS ISO-SIG) will be held in Glasgow on 13th and 14th January 2009. BMSS ISO-SIG will run until lunchtime on 14th January, with the annual meeting of the UK Isotope Ratio MS users group, SIMSUG, commencing after lunch and ending on 15th January. You and your colleagues are very welcome to attend both meetings.

The main them of this meeting will be the in vivo application of stable isotope tracers. Human, animal, plant and microbial applications, from single cells to ecosystems, will all be welcomed.  A wide interest in target analysis to study the flux of key metabolites and macromolecules is anticipated, but the organisers also wish to encourage studies of micronutrients, hormones, mediators and xenobiotics using stable isotope tracers. Although 'omics techniques are the remit of other BMSS SIG's, such as Biological MS, the organising committee will invite speakers from the 'omics community to illustrate their work using stable isotopes.

Registration for both meetings will be through the BMSS, while a web site at SUERC will host information, a programme and submitted abstracts. The launch of the registration system and the web site will be announced through this email list. Please broadcast the meetings to colleagues who may be interested in attending!

For now, can I encourage you to consider the material that you or a member of your group would like to present in January? As is the case with SIMSUG, the organising committee will invite a small number of keynote speakers, but the majority of the programme will be created from original communications submitted in abstract from. We would be particularly keen to encourage original communications from postgraduate students, in either oral or poster form. Registered students who are BMSS members will be eligible to apply for a travel grant.

SIMSUG 2009, January 2009

SIMSUG 2009 will be held in Glasgow on 14th and 15th January 2009. On this occasion SIMSUG will be preceded by a meeting of the newly formed BMSS special interest group on stable isotopes which will run from 13th January to lunchtime on 14th January (BMSS ISO-SIG). SIMSUG sessions will start after lunch. You are very welcome to attend both meetings. The BMSS meeting will focus on the use of stable isotope tracers and MS techniques other than IRMS.  To help integrate this theme with SIMSUG, the local organising committee will try to encourage compound-specific applications to be presented in the first session at SIMSUG, after lunch on Wednesday 14th January.  Please put SIMSUG in your diary and broadcast these meetings to your colleagues.

The BMSS have agreed to administer these two meetings and to maintain an email list of delegates for both. Registration for SIMSUG will thus be cheaper for BMSS members. Registered students who are BMSS members will be eligible to apply for a travel grant. When the registration system and the web site have been launched this will be announced through the new email list. Registration will be on-line through the BMSS web site. An abstract form and eventually, the programme and book of abstracts, will be downloadable from the web site. Please start to think of the material you would like to present in oral or poster form at one or both meetings. Thermo Instruments have kindly agreed to be main sponsor for both meetings.
